Yoshi's Island: 30 Ranking All The Levels!

YOSHI'S ISLAND: 30

Ranking all the levels!

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is celebrating 30 years since Nintendo released it in 1995!

With it's unique art style, level design, and egg-throwing mechanics, Yoshi's Island became an instant classic upon release.

It's also the first game to utilize the Argonaut Game's Super FX2 microchip, which enabled effects such as 3D movement of walls,  the ability for objects to rotate and change size, and a psychedelic effect when Yoshi trips out from touching a "Fuzzy"!

Saddle up and hop on as we rank every Yoshi's Island level, plus bosses and minigames too!

Welcome To Yoshi's Island

Welcome To Yoshi's Island

The introduction to Yoshi's Island features a text box explaining how to flutter jump as Yoshi makes his way across a short warm-up stage. A few Spring Balls/Jump Arrows and shrinking Expansion Blocks give a small taste for what lies ahead on your journey.

#54

The Very Loooooong Cave (6-5)

This autoscrolling level is considered (one of) the hardest in the game. Achieving the trick to prevent the sped up autoscroll near the end is almost as difficult as completing the level normally. Getting 100% in World 6 isn't easy no matter what level, it's just that this one is the most tedious.

More Monkey Madness 3-9

#53

More Monkey Madness (3-9)

Out of all the Extra stages in Yoshi's Island, this one is well known to be brutal. Grinders (monkeys) spitting watermelon seeds, Tap-Taps, and disappearing Fly Guys with red coins are in an all out barrage against Yoshi as you try over and over and over to just reach the goal ring 100% or not!

#52

Hit That Switch! (2-9)

This Extra level from World 2 is slightly easier than World 3's, but it's still an extreme challenge. Hitting the red ! Switches at just the right time is nerve-racking, especially when you know you're so far away from solid ground that if you mess up, your flutter skills better be ace to get back to the start!

Prince Froggy's Fort 3-4

#51

Prince Froggy's Fort (3-4)

Prince Froggy rules a mostly outdoor fort of blue spikes, Cheep-Cheeps, Clawdaddys, and Grinders who are out to get Yoshi at any cost! This feels like one of the longer fort levels with various rooms to check, as well as a chance for Yoshi to use a Morph Bubble to transform into the Submarine.

#50

The Cave Of The Mystery maze (2-6)

This feels like two stages in one. Yoshi starts outside with a nice pastel sunset. After Ground Pounding deeper into the pink earth, you find a Winged Cloud that reveals the door to an underground maze of a cave. If you make it back outside, after traversing Countdown Platforms, you'll see the goal.

Ride Like The Wind 4-7

#49

Ride Like The Wind (4-7)

This is an interesting level that can leave you feeling disjointed around the time you come to a tunnel network somehow suspended in the air. It's the first time you encounter boomerang-like Huffin Puffins to substitute for eggs, as well as an alternate route via an inflatable balloon!

#48

Don't Look Back! (4-3)

Those red coin Fly Guys are a real menace in this stage as Yoshi frantically races to grab them before they disappear! Balloons begin the level by taking you to new heights, and the inflatable red balloon makes its debut offering a shortcut above Boo Balloons and bombs on the ground route.

Don't Look Back! 4-3
Beware The Spinning Logs 6-3

#47

Beware The Spinning Logs (6-3)

There are gimmick levels, then there's this. The entire level is based off unsteady footing as you roll Chomp Rocks resting atop posts for red coins and use the spinning logs to propel Yoshi to (multiple) bonuses! Fuzzies return one last time, and good luck dodging them on the small posts and mushrooms.

#46

Poochy Ain't Stupid (1-9)

I can't say I agree with this stage's title. Poochy, bless his heart, means well but will excitedly throw you into lava if you're not careful. The Extra levels in each world are tough, and this one is also an autoscroller to top it off. Well, unless you know how to use all those bats to your advantage...
